A Guide to Locks - Do's and Don'ts

When It Comes to Getting the Best Out of Your Security

Did you know that Unico is the UK agent for Lehmann Locks and Huwil Locks from Germany and the UK agent for Siso Denmark? We supply other leading brands too and are confident of being able to meet your needs. Whether you are replacing locks in your home or purchasing locks for commercial premises, this guide is designed to help you get the best performance from your locks and security.

Here are the Do’s…

Do Measure Accurately

Take accurate measurements of your door and the lock mechanism to ensure a proper fit. Incorrect measurements can lead to poor installation and compromised security.

Do Choose the Right Lock for Your Needs

Ensure the lock you select is appropriate for its intended use. We stock and supply a massive range of locks from cupboard door locks, furniture locks, drawer locks, and espagnolette locks to magnetic locks. If in doubt, contact our team who will be happy to advise on the best lock for your application.

Do Decide Which Side of the Door You Will Be Fitting the Lock

A Right Hand (RH) lock is fixed to the left side of a right-hand hung door, and a Left Hand (LH) lock is fixed to the right side of a left-hand hung door.

Do Decide if You Need Keyed Alike or Differ Locks

Keyed alike (also known as Pass Locks) means that the locks are supplied with the same key numbers. So, for example let’s say you order 10 keyed-alike locks, then all of the locks will have the same key number and the same key.

On the other hand, differ locks mean that the locks are supplied with different key numbers so for example let’s say you order 10 differ locks then all of the locks will be supplied with a different key number and different keys.

Do Decide if You Want Mastered Keys or Non-Mastered Keys

We can supply Master Keys for a number of manufacturers' locks and key ranges including Huwil, Lehmann, Siso, Lowe and Fletcher, Hafele, Ojmar among many others.

Non-mastered locks simply mean that there is no Master Key available.

Do Decide if You Require Removeable Cylinders
Removeable Cylinder

Removable Cylinders mean that the lock cylinder can be removed and replaced with another cylinder by the same manufacturer. The lock cylinders are supplied separately from the lock housings.

Do Test the Lock After Installation

After fitting the lock, test it multiple times to ensure it operates smoothly and securely. Check that the key turns easily and that the door latches and unlatches correctly.

Do Perform Regular Maintenance

Schedule regular maintenance on your locks and check for any signs of wear or damage.

Do Consider Upgrading Old Locks

If your locks are old or outdated, consider upgrading them to more secure, modern options. Newer locks often come with enhanced security features. You can browse our range on our website and even order online

And the Don’ts…

Don’t Install Cheap, Low-Quality Locks

Avoid using low-quality locks that can easily be tampered with or broken. Invest in high-quality locks to ensure better security and peace of mind. We have been supplying locks to the retail, trade and domestic markets for over 50 years, working with leading lock manufacturers that won’t let you down on quality and durability.

Don’t Force the Lock During Installation

If the lock doesn’t fit properly, don’t force it. Double-check your measurements and adjustments. Forcing the lock can damage both the lock and the door.

Don’t Forget to Align the Lock Properly

Misalignment can cause the lock to malfunction. Ensure the lock mechanism aligns perfectly with the strike plate.

Don’t Reuse Old Screws

Always use the screws provided with the new lock. Old or incorrect screws can compromise the lock’s security and stability.

Don’t Ignore Signs of Wear and Tear

If you notice any signs of wear and tear, address them immediately. A compromised lock can be easily breached.

Don’t Forget to Educate Users

Inform all users about the proper use and care of the new locks. Educated users are less likely to misuse the lock and more likely to report any issues promptly.
