What is an Espagnolette Lock?

An espagnolette lock, also sometimes called a bar lock, is a type of lock used on furniture, particularly cabinets, lockers, and cupboards. It offers a unique way to secure multiple points on the furniture door.

Here's how it works:

1.     An espagnolette lock typically has a central lock nozzle or turn knob.

2.     Turning the knob or key rotates one or more long round bars fitted inside the lock.

  1. These bars extend from the lock towards the top and bottom (and sometimes, if mounted horizontally, even to the sides) of the furniture frame.
  2. As you turn the handle, the bars rotate and engage with strikers mounted on the frame, effectively locking the door at multiple points.
  3. Some espagnolette locks also have a bolt in the lock body to provide three-point locking.

Here are some benefits of using espagnolette locks for furniture:

  • Multi-point locking: They provide a more secure closure compared to single-point locks like cam locks.
  • Even pressure distribution: By engaging multiple points, they distribute the pressure from the lock more evenly, preventing warping of the furniture door.
  • Clean look: Since the bars are internal, they offer a clean and minimal look on the outside of the furniture.
  • Height:  Espagnolette locks are an ideal solution for locking larger doors.

Here are some things to consider with espagnolette locks:

  • Installation: They can be slightly more complex to install compared to some other furniture locks.  The bars are supplied in 1m or 2m lengths and will most likely need to be cut to size.
  • Visibility: While the bars are hidden, the central lock nozzle or knob is visible.
  • Not ideal for all furniture: Their size might not be suitable for small drawers or cabinets.
  • There are different types of espagnolette lock:  Espagnolette locks are available with use with the older style ‘bit’ keys or the more secure cylinder locks.  Choose the right lock type for your project.  They are also available for use with the Lehmann removeable cylinder range.
